Hens volleyball team wins tournament title

UD’s Megan Welch was named the outstanding player at the Asics Delaware Invitational volleyball tournament.

9:44 a.m., Aug. 28, 2006--The University of Delaware volleyball team opened its season by winning the Asics Delaware Invitational Tournament played Friday and Saturday at Barbara Viera Court in the Carpenter Sports Building.

The Fightin' Blue Hens opened the tournament with a 3-0 victory over Marist College on Friday, and followed with 3-1 victories over Seton Hall University and the University of Texas Arlington on Saturday.

The Hens will return to action with a home game against Temple University at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 29 at Barbara Viera Court. They will then travel to compete in a weekend tournament at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay.

In the victory over Marist, sophomore Kelly Gibson had a game high 12 kills and added five service aces as the Hens won 30-20, 30-8 and 30-8. Junior Megan Welch had 32 assists and seven aces while senior Claire McCormack had eight digs. Junior Colleen Walsh had nine kills and freshman Kelly Matthias had six kills and two blocks.

Against Seton Hall, Gibson had 21 kills as the Hens won 30-25, 23-30, 30-28 and 32-30. Walsh had 17 kills and freshman Michelle LaLonde had 12 kills and eight digs.

In the victory over Texas Arlington, Walsh had 28 kills and five digs as the Hens won 30-18, 27-30, 31-29 and 30-22.

Welch, Gibson and Walsh were named to the All-Tournament team, along with Emily Nedderman, Teena Sobczak and Ellen Murray of Texas Arlington and Kelly Widders of Seton Hall. Welch was named the tournament's top player.
