Service-Learning Symposium set Aug. 11

2:16 p.m., Aug. 2, 2006--Members of the UD community are invited to hear UD's Office of Service Learning's (OSL) scholarship students share their experiences working with community organizations under the guidance of a faculty member.

The Service-Learning Symposium, which will be held from 9 a.m.-12:10 p.m., Friday, Aug. 11, in the Ewing Room of the Perkins Student Center, will afford service-learning scholars the opportunity to recount their experiences and the impact service-based coursework has had on their peers.

Service-learning scholars complete a 10-week course in a setting outside the classroom. Working for a community nonprofit or governmental agency, service-learning scholars perform community-based action research or perform a service-based corporate activity and engage in academic pursuits under the mentoring of a UD faculty member. After spending most of each week working in the community, students devote about one-quarter of their time to academic reading, discussion and reflection.

Talks by the 16 scholarship students include:

  • “Teaching Mathematics and Studying Mathematics Teaching: Service at the Clarence Fraim Boys and Girls Club,” by Allison Lutz, junior, elementary education;
  • “Furthering Reading for Pleasure at the Latin American Community Center,” by Amanda Benton, sophomore, elementary education;
  • “Mentoring Through Disaster Recovery,” by Angela Dickinson, senior, elementary education;
  • “Project with the Fairmount Early Intervention Preschool and the Penn Children's Center,” by Yelana Bluestein, senior, psychology;
  • “Public Archaeology in Old New Castle,” by Stephanie Shaw, senior, anthropology/art conservation;
  • “Gulf Coast Recovery at Beauvoir and the Ohr-O'Keefe Museum," by Kimberly Crozier, senior, and Lauren Horelick, senior, both art conservation;
  • “Fair Trade and Market Development: People Helping People in the Business World,” by Christina Falcione, junior, marketing;
  • “Web Site for the Delaware Public Policy Institute,” by Shannon Moores, senior, English;
