Abrahamson appointed men’s soccer assistant

Guy Abrahamson will serve as assistant men’s soccer coach.

9:03 a.m., Aug. 17, 2006--Guy Abrahamson, a former All-America soccer player at Rutgers University, has been named assistant coach of the University of Delaware men's soccer team, it was announced Wednesday by Fightin' Blue Hens Head Coach Ian Hennessy.

Abrahamson joins the UD staff after serving as an assistant coach at his alma mater, St. Benedict's Prep School in Newark, N.J., last fall. He also served as a coach for the prestigious Players Development Academy in New Jersey.

The UD staff also includes second-year student assistant and goalkeeper coach Hayes Glanden.

Abrahamson, 25, was a standout at St. Benedict's Prep and was a captain of teams that won consecutive national championships in 1997 and 1998. He earned state player of the year honors and first team All-State honors as both a junior and senior. As a senior, he was named to the Parade All-America team. Recently, he was inducted into the St. Benedict's Prep Soccer Hall of Fame.

Abrahamson played for Rutgers from 1999-2002. He served as team captain for three years, earned All-Big East Conference honors four times and was named a National Soccer Coaches Association of America second team All-America as both a junior and senior. He earned his degree in psychology from Rutgers in 2003.

Abrahamson competed as a member of the U.S. under-18, under-20 and under-23 national teams during his high school and college career and was drafted in 2003 by the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer.
