CAA women’s soccer: Blue Hens picked fifth

UD Head Coach Scott Grzenda

10:57 a.m., Aug. 8, 2006--The University of Delaware women's soccer team has been picked to finish fifth in the Colonial Athletic Association this season, according to a vote of the 12 conference head coaches.

Virginia Commonwealth University, which has finished atop the CAA women's soccer regular season standings the past two seasons, was picked to repeat and received eight first-place votes. The Rams were followed by defending CAA tournament champion Hofstra University, which earned a pair of first-place votes, and James Madison University, also with two first-place votes.

The College of William & Mary, a perennial CAA power, was fourth in the poll, followed by UD, Old Dominion University, George Mason University, the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Northeastern University, Towson University, Georgia State University and Drexel University.

UD, which is led by 17th-year Head Coach Scott Grzenda, finished 10-6-4 in 2005 and reached the conference championship tournament. The Hens defeated William & Mary in the quarterfinals but fell 2-1 to Hofstra, the eventual champion, in the semifinals. Grzenda was named the CAA Coach of the Year.

The Hens return 14 letter winners, including leading scorer and All-CAA Rookie Team selection Caitlyn Germain and All-CAA Second Team defender Lauren Petchel.

UD will open the season with a game against St. Joseph's University at 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 25, at the Delaware Mini-Stadium. The Hens will remain at home for a game against Seton Hall University at 1 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 27.
