UD alum in World Rowing Championships in UK

10:49 a.m., Aug. 18, 2006--Evan Price, who graduated from UD in 2004 with a double major in political science and international relations and history, will be competing in the World Rowing Championships, Aug. 20-27, in Eton, England.

Price will be competing in the lightweight quadruple sculls competition, as part of the 26-crew U.S. Rowing Team contingent. The 84-person roster includes 53 past national team members and many world and Olympic medalists.

A native of Butler, Pa., and first-time national team member, Price trains with the Penn Athletic Club Rowing Association in Philadelphia

“I will spend a week in England, preparing for the World Championships,” Price said. “I also will be racing throughout the week of the championship. I will race between three and four times during the week, depending on how many boats are entered in my event.”

Joining Price in representing the United States in lightweight quad competition at World Championships at Eton is fellow Penn Athletic Club member Bjorn Larsen, (Lake Stevens, Wash.), as well as Andrew Liverman (Oakton, Va.) and Shane Madden (Ambler, Pa.).

Price and his teammates face a field of international crews from 64 countries, with 400 boat crews competing in 27 boat classes.

As a former member of the UD Men's Rowing Club, Price trained under longtime coach Chuck Crawford, whom he credits for helping to develop his competitive drive in the sport.

“I rowed for four years at UD, with three of those years under Coach Crawford,” Price said. “Coach Crawford took a small, rather unassuming group of eight guys in my sophomore year and turned us into a national lightweight rowing force by my junior and senior years. He demonstrated the power of hard work, good technique and a lot of heart. I have carried that lesson over into my post-collegiate rowing career.”

Price also credits Crawford for planting the seed in his mind that he could one day become a member of the U.S. National Rowing Team.

“From my sophomore year on, he reminded me over and over just how hard I would have to work to make a national team,” Price said. “So, in a lot of ways, my being named to the 2006 National Team is a tribute to Coach Crawford and his coaching abilities, as well as his undying belief that I had what it takes. Without his help it might never have happened.”

Accomplishments as a UD oarsman include a first-place in the men's lightweight eight in the Dad Vail Regatta of 2003, a second place in the men's lightweight eight at the 2002 Dad Vail Regatta, and a first-place finish in the men's lightweight eight at the SIRA Championships in 2002 and 2003.

Currently working as a paralegal at Portnoff Law Associates in Wynnewood, Pa., Price, who will be getting married in September, lives in Plymouth Meeting, Pa.

Making the national team is the fulfillment of a dream that began during his junior year at UD, Price said, and also is the result of training days that start at 4:30 a.m. and often last until 10:30 p.m.

“Realizing this goal meant a lot of early mornings, a lot of hard work, and a lot of sacrifices,” Price said. “Making the national team has truly made all the hard work worthwhile.”
