UD ranked 27th among top public universities

0:05 a.m., Aug. 18, 2006--The University of Delaware continues to be counted among the nation's finest public institutions of higher education, ranking 27th in U.S. News & World Report's 2007 “America's Best Colleges” issue.

UD is ranked 67th among all national universities, both public and private, tied with the University of Connecticut and the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. In last year's ranking, UD was 26th among public universities and 66th overall. Princeton University holds the top overall ranking, followed by Harvard and Yale.

In the magazine's ranking of best undergraduate engineering programs among schools whose highest degree is a doctorate, UD's College of Engineering is ranked 60th and tied with Auburn University, Boston University, Clemson University, Illinois Institute of Technology, Rochester Institute of Technology, State University of New York Stony Brook, University at Buffalo, University of Illinois Chicago, University of Utah and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

UD draws special notice in a “programs to look for” section on undergraduate research and creative projects. It is one of 35 universities cited for programs in which students, working independently or in small teams and mentored by a faculty member, do intensive and self-directed research or creative work that results in an original scholarly paper or product that can be formally presented on or off campus.

“These rankings, which are similar to those of recent years, indicate UD's solid position among the nation's universities,” UD President David P. Roselle said. “Even more meaningful indicators of the University's high reputation than rankings of this sort are our very strong freshman applicant pool and a graduate applicant pool that is nearly four times the size of those offered admission. These more important indicators are the result of the exceptional quality of our educational offerings, our distinguished faculty and attentive staff, and our attractive and up-to-date facilities, coupled with substantial amounts of financial aid. The bottom line is that the University of Delaware is a highly desired and affordable educational choice.”

U.S. News & World Report rankings are based on peer assessment (weighted 25 percent), retention (20 percent), faculty resources (20 percent), student selectivity (15 percent), financial resources (10 percent), graduation rate performance (5 percent) and alumni giving rate (5 percent).

The college guide issue is scheduled for the Aug. 28 edition of U.S. News & World Report, available beginning Monday, Aug. 21, on newsstands. The companion America's Best Colleges guidebook also will be available on newsstands beginning Monday.
