Profile of the Class of 2010

11:08 a.m., Aug. 29, 2006--Jessica is the new Jennifer among freshmen entering UD this fall.

As the Class of 2010 settles in to become part of the campus community, admission records reveal other more impressive facts about these new UD students.

Enrolled this semester are 3,308 freshman and 462 transfer students.

Slightly more than 14 percent (479) of incoming freshman entered UD with a 4.0 GPA. The middle 50 percent have GPAs ranging from 3.46-3.91.

Under the new SAT scoring system, the middle 50 percent of this year's freshman class scored from 1,770-1,970 out of a possible 2,400. The middle 50 percent of those being admitted into the Honors Program scored an average of 2,000-2,130. For freshmen who took the ACT Composite, which includes a written test, the average score was 28 with an average of 31 for Honor's Program students. The highest possible ACT score is 36.

Most freshmen participated in sports during high school--78 percent--with 63 percent doing community service or volunteering.

About a third of the Class of 2010, or 1,006, are Delawareans; 2,286 are from out-of-state (mostly New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania); and more than 100 freshman are from other nations.

Fifteen percent of the class is African American, Native American, Asian American, Latino American or Pacific Islander.

Most freshmen are enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.

The average age of the freshman class is 18 years and 4 months. The youngest will enter UD at age 16, the oldest is 25, and there will be 23 sets of twins beginning their studies on campus this semester.

And last but not least, the most popular name for female freshmen is Jessica, with Lauren a close second. Last year's most popular name, Jennifer, dropped to fourth place.

For the men, Andrew and Matthew tied for first place, with the ever-popular Michael just one freshman away.
