New certificate in financial planning offered 3:31 p.m., Aug. 17, 2006--The University of Delaware's Division of Professional and Continuing Studies announces a new Certificate in Financial Planning, offered in cooperation with the Lerner College of Business and Economics. Classes begin Sept. 26. Demand for financial planners is expected to grow in coming years, as more and more baby boomers and Gen-Xers seek professional advice in money matters. Financial adviser was in the top-10 list of Money magazine's "50 Best Jobs in America," published April 25. UD's Certificate in Financial Planning covers all aspects of the financial planning process, including insurance planning and risk management, employee benefit planning, retirement and estate planning, income tax and investments. A key component of the certificate is its final capstone course, designed to integrate all of the financial planning topics taught in the program and engage the participant in critical thinking and practical decision-making exercises. Each topic in the certificate program is taught by professionals in the applicable field. "Financial planners must meet the gold standard to attract, retain and benefit a desirable clientele," Daniel Danese, certificate program director, said. "Today, that standard is the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) certification, the most recognizable accreditation in a well-informed market place." Successful completion of the UD Certificate in Financial Planning fulfills the education requirement for CFP certification, as approved by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards. Besides passing the exam and completing the education requirement, other requirements for certification include work experience and a bachelor's degree (in any field) from an accredited college or university. “The CFP board is pleased to have an educational institution of the caliber of the University of Delaware now offering its approved financial planning curriculum,” Barton C. Francis, CFP, chairperson of the CFP Board of Governors, said. “As student interest in financial planning as a career continues to grow, we anticipate that the University of Delaware's program will contribute significantly to the number of qualified candidates seeking to sit for the CFP Certification Examination.” The program can be completed in one year. The cost of the complete certificate program is $4,350, which includes all textbooks. Payment plans are available. Register on the web at [www.continuingstudies.udel.edu/fp] or by calling (302) 831-1171. Attend a free information session about the certificate at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 23, in 125 Lerner Hall on UD's Newark campus.
