Two nursing faculty honored
11:21 a.m., Aug. 7, 2006--Two UD faculty in the Department of Nursing have been nationally recognized for their achievements as nurses and educators. Janice Selekman, professor of nursing, has received the Excellence in Education Award from the Society of Pediatric Nurses. The award recognizes those who have made significant contributions to pediatric nursing as educators. Selekman specializes in children with chronic conditions, adolescent high-risk behaviors, which include sexuality and body adornment, learning disabilities and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and student health. She has worked as a pediatric staff nurse and a clinical nurse specialist at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
Amy Nagorski Johnson, associate professor of nursing, has won the National Excellence in Neonatal Nursing Practice Award from the Academy of Neontal Nurses. The award recognizes excellence in neonatal nursing practices and communication skills, knowledge in an area of specialization and influence as a role model. Johnson will receive the award in September at the academy's 2006 national meeting in Las Vegas. Johnson specializes in the developmental care of high-risk infants, family-centered nursing care in the intensive care unit and nursing care of children and their families. She has worked as a pediatric, obstetrical and neonatal intensive care nurse. Johnson also is conducting research on early “Kangaroo holding” of neonates to improve outcomes and has lectured both nationally and internationally on nursing care of high-risk infants. Johnson received an excellence-in-teaching award from UD in 2005. Article by Julia Parmley, AS 07
