Mortar Board awards UD chapter top honor

2:09 p.m., Aug. 11, 2006--UD's Tassell Chapter of Mortar Board was presented with its Golden Torch Award for the 2005-06 academic year at the organization's national conference held July 28-30 in Columbus, Ohio.

The chapter was one of 19 to take home Golden Torch Awards, which are presented to chapters whose seniors excel in the areas of scholarship, leadership and service through activities such as research, acting as teaching assistants, participating in extra credit activities or projects and other demonstrations of scholastic ability.

Tassell Chapter President Whitney Bateson, CHS '07, said the chapter is honored to have received the prestigious award, one which they worked hard to earn. “It shows we are being recognized for putting a lot of time into our projects and really trying to make a difference on campus and in the community,” Bateson said.

UD's application for consideration for the Golden Torch Award described the Tassell Chapter as consisting of creative, responsible students, many of whom have scholarships and are on the Dean's List but still find the time to be role models for the community by donating their time to service events. According to the application, the chapter hosted a drunk-driving awareness project in collaboration with MADD, cooked dinner at a Ronald McDonald House, collected books and donated them to a local school, raked leaves and painted garage doors at a half-way house and ran a blood drive on campus.”

Mortar Board is a national honor society of college seniors that recognizes its members for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. Since 1918, the organization has grown from the four founding chapters to 214 collegiate and 43 alumni chapters with more than 240,000 initiated members across the nation. The Tassell Chapter at the University of Delaware was chartered in 1960.

Mortar Board provides opportunities for continued leadership development, promotes service to colleges and universities and encourages lifelong contributions to the global community. Some notable Mortar Board members include former President Jimmy Carter, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, cyclist Lance Armstrong and former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
