1:36 p.m., Aug. 15, 2006--The University of Delaware field hockey team has been picked to finish sixth in the Colonial Athletic Association this season according to a preseason vote of conference coaches.

Old Dominion University, which has won 13 of the last 15 CAA field hockey championships, is considered the favorite, receiving seven first place votes and 63 total points. The Monarchs are followed by Northeastern University, which received two first place votes and 55 points.

James Madison University received 46 points, the College of William & Mary 42, Hofstra University 40, UD 32, Drexel University 21, Towson University 16 and Virginia Commonwealth University 9.

Head Coach Carol Miller's Fightin' Blue Hens, who finished 8-11 overall and 2-6 in the conference last season, will face a challenging schedule in 2006, including a game against the defending champion University of Maryland at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 13, in College Park. The Terrapins are coached by former UD star Missy Meharg.

The Hens will open the season in the Champion's Tournament at Duke University on Aug. 26-27. They will face Michigan State University at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 26, and will take on either the University of Louisville or Duke on Sunday.

UD will return home to Rullo Stadium for the Blue Hen Classic tournament Sept. 2-3. The Hens will face Ohio State University at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 2, and Syracuse University at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 3. Also participating in the tournament will be the University of Pennsylvania. Another former UD player, Anne Wilkinson, is head coach of Ohio State.

Among the returning UD field hockey players are All-America candidates Amanda Warrington and Katie Evans, All-CAA forward Molly Burke, CAA All-Rookie forward Casey Howard and fourth-year starting goalkeeper Megan Allen.
