Dan Gottlieb guest at Sept. 12 Life Portraits event

9:34 a.m., Aug. 18, 2006--Dan Gottlieb, author, psychologist and host of the popular public radio program Voices in the Family, will speak at the Life Portraits Series at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 12, at the Bowman Center, located on the Bank of America Newark campus. The Life Portraits Series is a combined effort of the Delaware Foundation Researching Citizens (DFRC) and UD's Center for Disabilities Studies (CDS).

Gottlieb, who became paralyzed from the chest down after an automobile accident in 1979, will discuss the challenges of living with a disability and read excerpts from his new book, Letters to Sam, a compilation of letters he wrote to his grandson, who has a form of autism.

Gottlieb began his practice as a psychologist and family therapist in 1969 after receiving undergraduate and graduate degrees from Temple University. Since 1985, he has hosted Voices in the Family, an award-winning mental health call-in radio show aired on WHYY 90.9 FM, Mondays at noon and Sundays at 6 a.m.

Doors for the talk will open at 6 p.m. and there is a $5 admission charge per person. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance by calling (302) 831-3632. The first 100 persons to make reservations will receive a complimentary copy of Gottlieb's book, Letters to Sam: A Grandfather's Lessons of Love, Loss and Gifts of Life.

The Life Portraits Series is designed to educate the public about people with disabilities, debunk stereotypes and boost awareness about ways to make communities more inclusive.

Sponsors for this event include UD's College of Human Services, Education & Public Policy; Christiana Care Health System; Delaware Assistive Technology Initiative; Division of Developmental Disabilities Services; Delaware CarePlan; Homes for Life Foundation; Neurology Associates; Parent Information Center; the Arc of Delaware; Special Olympics Delaware; Delaware Elwyn; the Autism Society of Delaware; and MetDesk.
