Hens tap Flacco to start season at quarterback

Joe Flacco

2:56 p.m., Aug. 23, 2006--When the Fightin' Blue Hens kick off the season against the Golden Rams of West Chester University at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 9, junior Joe Flacco will be the starting quarterback.

U.D. Head Coach K.C. Keeler made the announcement Tuesday, Aug. 22, that the 6-6, 230 lb. first-year transfer from the University of Pittsburgh was his choice to lead the Blue Hen offense. Flacco had been battling for the top spot at quarterback with fifth-year senior Ryan Carty.

“Both quarterbacks have played very well, but Joe has played better than Ryan,” Keeler said.

Flacco (pronounced Flack-oh), a native of Audubon, N.J., did not see action last season, but did practice with UD during the fall following his transfer from Pitt, where he played for two seasons, appearing in three games during the 2004 season. At Audubon High School Flacco was a two-time All-South Jersey selection and threw for 5,137 yards during his career, including 2,020 yards in his senior year.

A native of Branchburg, N.J., Carty has been the Blue Hens' No. 2 quarterback for the last three seasons. He was backup quarterback to All-American Andy Hall during Delaware's run to the 2003 NCAA I-AA national title. He has appeared in 12 career games, completing 13 of 29 passes for 202 yards while rushing for 115 yards and two touchdowns.

Freshman Sean Scanlon, from Cherry Hill, N.J., will be the team's No. 3 quarterback.

Keeler also announced that freshman linebacker Durell Solomon, a 6-1, 215 lb. native of Winter Garden, Fla., has left the team for personal reasons.

The Hens will hold its second scrimmage of the preseason at 3 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 24, in Delaware Stadium.
