Blue Hen field hockey team reaches title game

Molly Burke’s goal lifted the UD field hockey team to a 5-4 victory over Michigan State.

9:28 a.m., Aug. 28, 2006--The University of Delaware field hockey team advanced to the title game of the weekend Champions Tournament in Durham, N.C., where the Fightin' Blue Hens fell 5-1 to host Duke University.

Duke, an Atlantic Coast Conference power, is ranked No. 3 in the nation. Senior Stephanie Swain scored the lone UD goal.

To reach the title game, the Hens rallied from an early three-goal deficit and defeated No. 16-ranked Michigan State University 5-4. Junior Molly Burke scored the game winner for the Hens off a penalty corner.

Also scoring goals for the Hens were freshmen Tori Karsten and Alexis Esbitt, Swain and Katie Evans, who also had three assists. Swain and senior Kaili Kao also had assists. Senior goalkeeper Megan Allen had five saves.

UD will return to action at the Blue Hen Classic to be played Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 2-3, at Rullo Stadium. The Hens will face Ohio State University at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, and Syracuse University at 2:30 p.m., Sunday.

Syracuse will play the University of Pennsylvania at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, and Penn will face Ohio State at 11:30 a.m., Sunday.
