Local aster expert to speak at UDBG Sept. 6

5:38 p.m., Aug. 24, 2006--The UD Botanic Gardens Friends group will kick off their annual fall plant event at 7 p.m., Sept. 6, the Wednesday before its Saturday sale, with an illustrated presentation on asters--the featured plant of the 2006 Fall Florabundance sale.

Jeanne Frett, a research horticulturist at Mt. Cuba in Greenville, will present “Asters: Autumn Stars and Their Companions,” at 7 p.m. in 132 Townsend Hall. She will discuss the results of a comparative study conducted at Mt. Cuba involving 56 species and cultivars of native asters and their performance in the Mid-Atlantic region. The study evaluated aster variations, including height, color, bloom period, cultural preferences, disease and insect resistance and hardiness.

The cost is $5 for nonmembers. UDBG Friends will be admitted free. Seating is limited, and reservations are required fore both members and nonmembers.
