Robin Elliott to lead national campus safety group
11:39 a.m., Aug. 17, 2006--Robin Elliott, director of occupational health and safety at UD, has been named chairperson of the Campus Safety, Health and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA). A division of the National Safety Council, CSHEMA is a nonprofit organization of more than 970 environmental health and safety professionals representing approximately 580 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Elliott was named CSHEMA chairperson during the organization's business meeting on July 18 in Anaheim, Calif. “I am honored to be serving my colleagues and helping to support the development of safety programs nationally and internationally,” Elliott said. “This also benefits the University because it gives me exposure to the best programs and innovative ideas and helps to bring national and international recognition to UD.” Before assuming her current duties as the organization's chairperson, Elliott served CSHEMA as a member of the Awards and Recognition Committee from 1998-2002. She served as treasurer for three years and was vice-chairperson for the past year. “I started attending CSHEMA conferences in 1995,” Elliott said. “I submitted our (UD) safety program for a Complete Safety Program Award in 1988, and was asked to join the Awards and Recognition Committee because UD's program won the award of honor.” CSHEMA's main mission is to help improve safety programs in higher education by providing networking and professional development to safety professionals internationally. “We support an awards program that helps encourage the development of formalized safety programs,” Elliott said. “We also support a listserv (e-mail list management) to help answer questions from safety professionals, provide regional seminars, benchmarking projects, webinars and conferences.” CSHEMA also works to determine the best safety practices and to provide government relations work on health and safety regulations, while networking with other organizations such as the National Association of College and University Business Officers; the Society for College and University Planning; and APPA, an association of higher education facilities professionals, Elliott said. As chairperson, Elliott will lead CSHEMA's executive committee and facilitate other committee work within the organization. She also will serve on the National Safety Council's Board of Delegates, furthering the agenda of the National Safety Council. Elliott holds a bachelor's degree from Dickinson College and a master's degree in physics from UD. Article by Jerry Rhodes |
