Kenneth B. Bischoff

Aug. 31, 2006--Kenneth B. Bischoff, 70, of Rehoboth Beach, died on Aug. 27 at Roxborough Memorial Hospital in Philadelphia.

Dr. Bischoff was a member of the UD faculty from 1976 until his retirement in 1997. He served as Unidel Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering, and he chaired the Department of Chemical Engineering from 1978-82.

Dr. Bischoff had a distinguished academic and industrial career. At the age of 34, he was the youngest person ever to hold an endowed chair at Cornell University, where he was named the Walter R. Read Professor of Engineering and also served as the director of the School of Chemical Engineering. He served on the faculties of the universities of Maryland and Texas at Austin, and was a postdoctoral fellow the Rijksuniversiteit Gent in Belgium. He also was a consultant for the National Institutes of Health, as well as other global corporations.

From 1972-74, he was a national director of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and he chaired the Council for Chemical Research in 1985 and the first International Symposium on Chemical Reaction Engineering in 1970.

His primary research interests were in the areas of chemical reaction engineering and applications to pharmacology and toxicology, resulting in more than 100 journal articles and two textbooks.

Dr. Bischoff received many awards throughout his career from both his academic and industrial colleagues for his important contributions to the advancement of science. He also was honored in 1996 with the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he received his doctorate in chemical engineering in 1961. He was a longtime member of the National Academy of Engineering and many other notable professional organizations.

He is survived by two children, Kathryn "Kathy" Scott and her husband, Richard, of Lewes, and James Bischoff, and his wife, Carol, of Hockessin; four grandsons, Wesley Scott, Alex Scott, Derek Bischoff and Max Bischoff; and Joyce Arlene Bischoff.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 31, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, where friends may call after noon.
