Delaware nine compete in summer baseball
2:42 p.m., Aug. 17, 2006--Nine members of the University of Delaware baseball team competed in collegiate summer wooden bat leagues, where the ping of ball on metal is replaced by the sweeter and more traditional sound. Playing summer ball were Brandon Menchaca, Ryan Jablonski, Jordan Herr, Adam Tsakonas, Dan Richardson, Ryan Englehardt, Todd Ozog, Kyle Davis and Bill Merkler. After enjoying an All-America sophomore season for the Fightin' Blue Hens in 2006, centerfielder Brandon Menchaca played for the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod League this summer. In 34 games, he led Harwich and finished eighth in the league with 12 stolen bases. He also hit two home runs. Harwich finished the summer with a 20-24 record. First baseman Ryan Jablonski and outfielder Jordan Herr spent their summers playing for the Rochester Royals of the New York Collegiate Baseball League. Rochester finished its inaugural season in the league with a 24-22 record and both Jablonski and Herr were named first team All-League. Jablonski led the league in batting average (.378) and hits (65) and finished third in doubles (12) and sixth in runs batted in (29). Herr finished third in the league in home runs (5) and eighth in batting average (.327). Jablonski will be a senior first baseman for the Blue Hens in 2007, while Herr will be a redshirt freshman outfielder. Third baseman Adam Tsakonas and right fielder Dan Richardson played for the Sanford Mainers of the New England Collegiate League. Sanford finished the summer 26-16, the third best record in the 12-team league. Tsakonas played 35 games for the Mainers and led the team in triples (2), finished second in home runs (3) and walks (16), and third in runs (22), doubles (5) and RBI (20). Tsakonas represented the Mainers in the NECBL home run derby competition. Richardson played 29 games in the outfield for the Mainers, stealing Catcher Ryan Englehardt and pitcher Todd Ozog played for the Staunton Braves of the Shenandoah Valley Baseball League. Staunton finished with a 21-31 record. Englehardt played in 27 games for the Braves and finished second on the team with a .414 on-base percentage. Ozog made six appearances for the Braves and had a 1-0 record before returning to Delaware to take a summer class. Both players will be seniors in 2007. Infielder Kyle Davis and catcher Bill Merkler played in the Atlantic Coast Baseball League. Merkler played in 33 games for the Jersey Pilots, while Davis played for the Quakertown Blazers. Davis played in 35 games and led the Blazers in triples (2) and was third in runs (18), doubles (5) and at-bats (113). Both players will be sophomores in 2007. The Hens begin fall practice on Sept. 10 and are scheduled to open the 2007 season against the University of Richmond on Feb. 23. |
