Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences In View Symposium

Junior Aaron Davis’ art explores the impact of super heroes on society.

5:15 p.m., Aug. 15, 2006--Undergraduate research scholars in the College of Arts and Sciences and UD's Lerner College of Business and Economics doing research this summer presented the fruits of their labor at a three-day symposium, “Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences in View,” Aug. 7-9.

Forty-two scholars gave colleagues, faculty members, peers and friends an overview of the topics they've been researching.

On Monday, Aug. 7, 16 students in the social sciences--economics, business administration, finance, political science, international relations, anthropology, criminal justice and communication--gave talks that included an analysis of major league baseball player/owner negotiations girls and violence and a content analysis of Comedy Central's The Daily Show.

Tuesday's lectures focused on art and music. Presentations included funeral music of 17th-Century Mexico, a study of the marine world as creative inspiration, the impact of superheroes in today's society and an exploration of the connection between art, fashion and the human state of mind. Each presenter had on display a corresponding music or art composition that embodied his or her presentation.

On Wednesday, English, history, philosophy and art history students made presentations on topics that included “Chaucer's Scandalous Word-Play,” “The Resolution of the Grandfather Paradox in Relation to the Possibility of Time Travel” and “The End of the Marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine and King Louis VII of France.”
