Apple recalls 1.8 million laptop batteries

4:39 p.m., Aug. 24, 2006--Certain batteries used in 1.8 million Apple laptop computers purchased from October 2003-August 2006 are being recalled because they may overheat and pose a potential fire hazard, the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission announced Aug. 24.

Manufactured by Sony, the Apple-branded lithium-ion batteries were sold with 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4. Nine devices have overheated, causing minor burns in two users, U.S. safety regulators announced today.

Apple posted a recall statement spelling out which models and batteries are affected and advised consumers that they should remove the batteries from their laptop computers to check to see the model and serial numbers on their batteries match those on the recall list. The posting also explains how to arrange to exchange recalled batteries for new ones.
