Blue Hen Weekend: Lacrosse, softball in play

8 a.m., April 27, 2007--Competing at home this weekend will be the University of Delaware women's lacrosse and softball teams.

The Fightin' Blue Hens women's lacrosse team, which is 9-5 and has clinched a spot in the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament, will take on Villanova University at 7 p.m., Friday, April 27.

The Hens are 5-2 in the conference and can have no worse than the third seed in the four-team tournament. They could finish with the second seed if James Madison University defeats Hofstra University on Friday.

Several UD players are among the conference leaders, with freshman Nicole Flego, junior Casey McCrudden and senior Katie Muth all in the top 10 in points per game. McCrudden and freshman Courtney Aburn are second in the CAA with three game-winning goals each.

Also, sophomore midfielder Stacey McPartland is among the leaders in caused turnovers and sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Cerveny is fourth with a 9.89 goals against average.

The UD softball team, which is 14-21-2 overall and 5-9 in the conference, will face George Mason University in a CAA weekend series at Delaware Field. The teams will meet in a doubleheader beginning at noon, Saturday, April 28, and in a single game at noon, Sunday, April 29.

This is the final home series of the regular season for the Hens, who will close on the road with a conference series at Georgia State University on May 5-6.

UD shortsthop Kim Ovittore is second in the conference with a .404 batting average, and third with a .649 slugging percentage.


On the road are the UD men's lacrosse team, which will travel to Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh for a CAA game at 1 p.m., Saturday, and the baseball team, which will play a conference series at Northeastern University on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The UD track and field teams will compete in the storied Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia on Friday and Saturday.
