UD’s Marquez, Kowtoniuk second in Winthrop meet
UD freshman Christine Marquez set a school record in the 400-meter dash.
9 a.m., April 2, 2007--University of Delaware track and field competitors Cristine Marquez and Annie Kowtoniuk earned second place finishes at the Asics Winthrop Invitational held Friday and Saturday at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C.

Marquez, a freshman, finished second in the 400-meter dash, and in so doing set a UD record of 55.74. She broke her own record of 56.34, which was set during preliminaries Friday. The previous record of 57.04 was set by Tyechia Smith in 2004.

Kowtoniuk finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 12:21.16, and was followed across the line by teammates Julianne Twomey in third and Leslie Wason in fourth.

UD's Amanda Marshall threw a career best 139 feet, 5 inches in the discus to finish fourth. Other fourth place finishes were by Christina Antonopoulos in the 1,500-meter run (4:53.01) and the 4x400-meter relay team of Alexi Capsouras, Daniella Price, Marquez and Brittany Wright (3:56.11).

Conrad Rapp was the top finisher for the UD men's team, as he finished sixth in the pole vault with a leap of 14 feet, 5.5 inches.

On Saturday afternoon at the University of Maryland Invitational, UD senior Jared Wasser finished second in the shot put with a throw of 52 feet, 4 inches.

Also for the Hens, Gregg Cantwell finished third in the 5,000-meter run (14:50.91).
