Tennis teams prepare for CAA championships

8:59 a.m., April 16, 2007--The University of Delaware tennis teams tuned up for this week's Colonial Athletic Association championships with a conference tennis weekend, with both the men's and women's teams in action on Friday and Saturday.

The CAA championship tournament will begin Thursday, April 19, at Huntington Park in Newport News, Va. The tournament will continue through Sunday, April 22.

In matches played Friday, the UD women's team defeated Towson University 4-3. The men's team fell 4-0 to the University of North Carolina Wilmington before bouncing back to defeat Hofstra University 4-2.

Picking up singles victories for the UD women's team were freshman Elena Berry, Liz Perlow and Alexa Dragonette. Berry defeated Eva Otanke 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1, while Perlow topped Jessica Woolfolk 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3. Alexa Dragonette posted her team-leading 18th singles victory by beating Kelly Parsons 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4.

In doubles play, Dragonette teamed up with Brittany Barsky for an 8-4 victory over Amanda Scatuorchio and Woolfolk at No. 2, while Perlow and Julie Schiller defeated Evelyn Izaguirre and Cassandra Ng 8-3 at No. 3 to earn the doubles point for the Hens.

Against Hofstra, the UD men's team picked up singles wins from Matt Liebman, Jon Schwartz and Camilo Perez. Liebman downed Taj Alexander 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3, while Schwartz came from behind to upend Matt Wacks 3-6, 7-5, 10-7 at No. 5. Camilo Perez had little trouble with Ali Hill as he won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.

The Hens swept the doubles as Austin Longacre and Andrew Blumberg defeated Luka Djordjevic and Andy Cha 6-5 (4) at No. 1, Jason Hanschmann and Nolan Greenberg topped Nenad Radakovic and Wacks 8-1, and Sam Barrer and Perez breezed by Hill and Alexander 8-0.

On Saturday, the UD women's team defeated Hofstra 4-0 and the men's team fell 4-3 to James Madison University.

The UD women's team only dropped one game as Dragonette, Barsky and Laura Honig all recorded easy victories in the only completed singles matches.

In doubles, the duo of Berry and Amanda Campbell defeated Laura Crouch and Stacey Kent 8-2 at No. 1, while Dragonette and Barsky beat Valerie McDonald and Tracey Ferrar 8-3 at No. 2. Perlow and Schiller improved to 6-0 on the year as they topped Lauren Mueller and Hannah Zuckerman 8-0 at No. 3.

Picking up singles wins for the UD men's team were Longacre, Barrer and Schwartz. Longacre defeated Jessie Tarr 7-6 (2), 6-3 at No. 1, while Barrer cruised past Brian Clay 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 to pick up his team-leading 14th singles victory. Schwartz topped Carlin Campbell, brother of Delaware women's tennis player Amanda Campbell, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 5.

In doubles, UD got its lone victory at No. 2 as Longacre and Blumberg teamed up to defeat Campbell and Clay 8-3.
