Blue Hen softball team drops pair at UMBC

8:11 a.m., April 19, 2007--The University of Delaware softball team dropped a doubleheader 5-1 and 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

With the losses, the Fightin' Blue Hens are now 14-18-2. They will travel to Hofstra University for a weekend Colonial Athletic Association series, playing a doubleheader beginning at noon, Saturday, April 21, and a single game at noon Sunday, April 22.

In the first game Wednesday, the teams were locked in a 1-1 struggle until the bottom of the sixth, when UMBC exploded for four runs and the win. UD senior pitcher Carolynn Sloat, who relieved starter Michelle Kenney, took the loss. Shortstop Kim Ovittore had two hits, including a home run, for the Hens.

In the second game, the Hens scored two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 3-2 lead but UMBC rallied for two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the victory. Sloat suffered her second loss of the day, working in relief of starter Samantha Shawn. Pinch hitter Barbara Traynor put the Hens ahead with a two-run home run.
