Blue Hen softball team sweeps Rider 11-3, 5-2

8:40 a.m., April 12, 2007--The University of Delaware softball team defeated Rider University 11-3 and 5-2 in a doubleheader played Wednesday afternoon at Delaware Field.

In the opener, the Fightin' Blue Hens overcame an early 3-2 deficit with multiple runs in every inning except the second.

UD second baseman Allison Borchers and shortstop Kim Ovittore had three hits each. Borchers had a double and a triple, and scored twice, while Ovittore drove in two runs and scored three.

Also for the Hens, first baseman Michelle Kenney and third baseman Michelle Plant had two hits each, with Kenney driving in a pair, and Catcher Quinn Megargel drove in three runs and outfielder Katie Lee had a hit, scored twice and drove in two runs.

UD senior pitcher Carolynn Sloat went the distance to earn the 60th win of her career, continuing to extend the school record.

In the nightcap, UD broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the fifth inning on doubles by Borchers, second baseman Cecile Egan and Ovittore. Borchers and Egan both finished with two hits and two runs batted in. Starting pitcher Samantha Shawn worked five scoreless innings to earn the win.

With the victories, the Hens are now 13-14-1. They will remain at home for a Colonial Athletic Association series against James Madison University. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at noon, Saturday, April 14, and a single game at noon, Sunday, April 15.
