Delaware softball team sweeps UNC Wilmington
Pitcher Carolynn Sloat has won 59 career games, the most in UD history.
8:44 a.m., April 9, 2007--The University of Delaware softball team completed a weekend series sweep of the University of North Carolina Wilmington with a 9-8 victory on Saturday at Delaware Field.

On Friday, the Fightin' Blue Hens took both ends of a doubleheader, winning 4-2 in the first game and 5-2 in the second.

With the victories, the Hens improved to 11-14-1 overall and are now 5-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association. They will return to action with a doubleheader at home against Rider University beginning at 3 p.m., Wednesday, April 11.

In the opening win over UNC Wilmington on Friday, UD shortstop Kim Ovittore had three hits, including a double and a triple, and scored three runs. She got things started in the three-run sixth inning, which decided the game, with a single. Key hits were provided by Michelle Kenney and Barbara Traynor, who hit run-scoring doubles, and Quinn Megargel, who singled home a run. Kenney worked one and one-third innings in relief of starter Carolynn Sloat and got the win.

In the second game Friday, UD broke out to a four-run lead after scoring two runs in the first and two more in the third. Cecile Egan had two hits, including a double, scored two runs and drove in one.
Ovittore doubled home a run in the first inning and Plant hit a run-scoring triple in the third. Starting pitcher Samantha Shawn got the win and Kenney worked three scoreless innings.

The Hens rallied from an 8-5 deficit to win on Sunday, scoring singles runs in the fifth and sixth innings to draw close and two in the seventh to win. Alison Borchers and Kenney had two hits each, and Ovittore hit a double to drive in one run in the deciding seventh inning. Michelle Plant worked a based-loaded walk to drive home Egan with the winning run. Sloat got the win, her school-record 59th career victory.
