Dennis Prather Inaugural Lecture set April 25
Dennis Prather, College of Engineering Alumni Professor
5:37 p.m., April 23, 2007--Dennis Prather will deliver his inaugural lecture as College of Engineering Alumni Professor with a presentation on nanophotonics at 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 25, in 130 Sharp Lab.

Prather, a member of the nanoelectronics, electromagnetics and photonics research group in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, is involved in the development of micro-, meso- and nanophotonic devices, applied optics and electromagnetic research, developing imaging technologies in the millimeter-wave part of the spectrum so that they can be seen and interpreted by the human eye.

His research is funded by the National Science Foundation, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Office of Naval Research, the Army Research Laboratory and industrial sponsors. Prather also has been awarded a grant from the Department of Defense for a project that will help enable computers to get closer to operating at the speed of light.

The author or coauthor of 24 U.S. patents and more than 250 publications, Prather is a fellow of the Optical Society of America and the Society for Photo-Instrumentation Engineers. He also is currently an associate editor for the Journal of Microlithography, Microfabrication and Microsystems.

He received the Outstanding Junior Faculty of Engineering Award in 2000-01, a National Science Foundation Career Award in 1999, an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award in 1999 and the W.J. Kastner Technical Achievement Award in 2000.

Prather received his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Maryland and joined the UD faculty in 1997.

There will be a reception following the lecture in the P.S. Dupont Hall lobby. The event is free and open to the public, but those planning to attend should call (302) 831-2401 or e-mail [ddalex@udel.edu].
