Talk on 'The Souls of Black Folk' set April 18

1:15 p.m., April 17, 2007--“The Souls of Black Folk,” presented by UD's Black Student Union, will feature guest speaker Na'im Akbar at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 18, in the Bacchus Theatre of the Perkins Student Center. The talk is free and open to the public.

Akbar has been acclaimed by Essence magazine as “one of the world's pre-eminent psychologists and a pioneer in the development of an African-centered approach in modern psychology.” He has served as associate professor at Norfolk State University, and as chairman of the Morehouse College psychology department and now is on the faculty in the Department of Psychology at Florida State University.

Akbar has served on the board of directors and as president of the National Association of Black Psychologists and also has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Black Studies and for eight years was the associate editor of the Journal of Black Psychology.

This lecture is cosponsored by Alpha Kappa Alpha, Alpha Phi Alpha, Cultural Programming Advisory Board, Dark Arts Dance Company, Delaware African Students Association, Delta Sigma Theta, Hekima Book Club, Kappa Alpha Psi, NAACP, NSBE, Omega Psi Phi, SPIT and Zeta Phi Beta.

Besides Akbar's lecture, the Black Student Union is sponsoring several other events this week for UD students only. They include:

  • Ms. BSU Pageant at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 19, in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center, $3 admission;
  • BSU BBQ, free food, fun and games at 4 p.m., Friday, April 20, at the Center for Black Culture;

  • Ice Cream Sundae Party, with free ice cream, at 6 p.m., Sunday, April 22, at Christiana Commons.
