Delaware baseball team sweeps Northeastern
Alex Buchholz hit a pair of home runs in the opener as the Hens swept a three-game series at Northeastern.
10:14 a.m., April 30, 2007--The University of Delaware baseball team swept a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series at Northeastern University over the weekend, and the Fightin' Blue Hens now find themselves in the thick of a very tight conference race.

With the three victories, UD improved 19-18 overall and is in third place in the CAA. Old Dominion University is atop the conference standings at 14-6, followed by Virginia Commonwealth University at 12-8 and the Hens at 11-9. George Mason University is a close fourth at 12-10 and the University of North Carolina Wilmington is fifth at 12-11.

UD will return to action with a nonconference game at the University of Maryland Baltimore County at 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 1. The Hens will then return to conference play with a three-game weekend series against the College of William and Mary at Bob Hannah Stadium. The teams will meet at 3 p.m., Friday, May 4, and at 1 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, May 5-6.

At Northeastern, UD won both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday, taking the first game 16-5 and the second 11-5.

In the first game Saturday, the Hens got home runs from Alex Buchholz, who hit two, Bryan Hagerich and Bill Merkler. Buchholz finished the day with five runs batted in and two runs scored. Ryan Jablonski had four hits, two runs batted in and three runs scored and both Hagerich and Merkler had three hits each. Starting pitcher Billy Harris worked six and two-thirds innings for the win.

In the second game, UD's Kyle Davis went three for three with two runs scored while Jablonski had two hits, including a double, and three runs batted in and two runs scored. Brandon Menchaca scored three runs and hit a pair of triples. Dan Richardson got the win in relief of Brent Gaphardt, and Davis Slovak earned his seventh save of the season.

On Sunday, the Hens won 8-1 as starting pitcher Chad Kerfoot scattered six hits and reliever Matt Heppner shut down Northeastern. UD broke on top with six runs in the first inning, as Adam Tsakonas tripled home two runs. He finished the day with three hits, while Hagerich, Merkler, Davis and Scott Shockley had two each.
