Blue Hens win finale in Old Dominion series

9:13 a.m., April 23, 2007--After struggling to score in the first two games of a Colonial Athletic Association series at Old Dominion University, the University of Delaware baseball team came to life with a 12-9 win on Sunday. The Fightin' Blue Hens fell 2-1 on Friday and 4-0 on Saturday before bouncing back with a victory.

UD is now 15-18 overall and 8-9 in the CAA. The Hens will return to action with a game against LaSalle University at 3 p.m., Tuesday, April 24, at Bob Hannah Stadium.

In Sunday's win, the Hens took a 6-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning when Old Dominion exploded for seven runs. UD responded with five of its own in the top of the seventh to seal the win. The big hits in the seventh were a double by Brandon Menchaca and a two-run home run by Alex Buchholz.

Buchholz finished with three hits, three runs batted in and one run scored. Adam Tsakonas also had a big game, with two hits, including a home run, three runs batted in and three runs scored. Bill Merkler and Scott Shockley had two hits each and Ryan Jablonski scored three runs.

On Friday, UD starting pitcher Billy Harris worked seven scoreless innings and struck out 10 batters, but it was not enough. The Hens could muster just one run, on a single by Tsakonas that scored Buchholz, who had reached on a double.

On Saturday, the Hens managed just four hits and could not get a run across.
