UD baseball team drops series at Georgia State

8:36 a.m., April 2, 2007--The University of Delaware dropped a Colonial Athletic Association series at Georgia State University, winning the opener but falling by a single run in extra innings in the following games.

The Fightin' Blue Hens won 2-1 on Friday but lost 9-8 in 10 innings on Saturday and 8-7 in 13 innings on Sunday.

In Friday's victory, UD pitchers Brent Gaphardt, Chad Kerfoot and David Slovak allowed just one run on five hits and struck out eight batters. Gaphardt got the win, and is now 2-0 on the season.

The Hens struck for two runs in the second inning, when designated hitter Scott Shockley scored on a double by right fielder Danny Overcash and catcher Ryan Engelhardt scored in a single by second baseman Kyle Davis.

Slovak took the loss in relief in Saturday's game, in which left fielder Bryan Hagerich and center fielder Brandon Menchaca hit home runs. Hagerich finished with three hits, three runs scored and two runs batted in. Both Menchaca and shortstop Alex Buchholz had a pair of hits.

On Sunday, the Hens led 7-3 entering the bottom of the ninth but Georgia State send the game into extra innings with a grand slam home run. Matt Heppner (1-4) took the loss. Third baseman Ryan Jablonski and Overcash hit home runs. Jablonski finished with three hits, and Buchholz, Adam Tsakonas and Davis had two hits each.

The Hens are now 6-15 overall and 3-6 in the CAA. They will return to action with a Liberty Bell Classic game against La Salle University at 3 p.m., Tuesday, April 3, at Bob Hannah Stadium.
