Delaware swim teams defeat Georgetown

10:29 a.m., Oct. 31, 2005--The University of Delaware swimming teams posted victories over Georgetown University in a meet held Saturday afternoon at Harry Rawstrom Pool in the Carpenter Sports Building. The UD women won 160-74 and the men won 148-93.

Meredith Law, Ellen Heinz and Alyson Oliver were double winners for the Fightin’ Blue Hens in the women’s competition. Law won the 500- and 100-yard freestyle events in 5:13.39 and 10:46.42, respectively, and Heinz won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events in 54.40 and 1:57.37. Oliver won the one-meter diving event with 241.50 points and the three-meter with 235.43 points.

Also for the Hens, Sarah Begley won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.37, Michelle Stephens won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:14.05, Stephanie House won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:11.78 and Emily Smathers won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:10.57.

The 400-yard medley relay team of Emily Watts, Lauren Southard, Begley and Maryann Walker won in a time of 4:01.75.

Andrew Zinn and Joe Virion each won two events for the Hens, with Zinn capturing the 50- and 100-yard freestyle in 21.61 and 48.21 and Virion the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle events in 4:57.32 and 10:10.80.

Levan Berizde won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.08, Branden Spencer won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:02.10 and Adam Blomberg won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:58.30. Matthew Abbruzzese won the three-meter diving competition with 249.64 points.

Also winning were the 400-yard medley relay team of Spencer, Mark Erdozy, James Lavendar and Beridze and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Zinn, Spencer, Blomberg and Berizde.

Both UD teams will return to action on Friday and Saturday with a combined meet at Old Dominion University that will include Northeastern University and the College of William & Mary. The meet will begin at 3 p.m., Friday, and will continue at 9 a.m., Saturday.
