UD women’s soccer falls in CAA semifinals

Shelby Lawrence
11:07 a.m., Nov. 7, 2005--The University of Delaware women’s soccer team jumped out to a 1-0 lead in Friday night’s Colonial Athletic Association semifinal match against Hofstra University but the Pride battled back for a 2-1 victory over the Fighin’ Blue Hens at Sports Backers Stadium on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.

Hofstra went on to win the CAA championship, topping Virginia Commonwealth 1-0 on Sunday.

In Friday’s semifinal, the Hens opened the scoring at the 13:32 mark when Shelby Lawrence took a feed from Alli D’Amico and scored from 10 yards out. The goal was the fifth of the year for Lawrence.

Hofstra rallied for a 1-1 tie at the half when Marie Curtin scored off a corner kick. The Pride clinched the win when Chrissy Arnone lofted a shot over the head of UD goalkeeper Lindsey Shover from 20 yards out with 26:29 left to play.

The Hens had a chance to tie the game late but Hofstra goalkeeper Becky Wachsberger made a diving stop off a shot by Shannon Alger with 9:04 remaining.

“I’m really proud of the way our team played tonight and all season long,” said UD Head Coach Scott Grzenda, the 2005 CAA Coach of the Year, said. “Over the last six or seven games we played our best soccer of the year, and I hope we can carry that over to next season.”

UD closed the season with a record of 10-6-4.
