Resident life students make conference presentations 4:33 p.m., Nov. 29, 2005--Students from the Office of Residence Life participated in the Mid-Atlantic Association of College and University Housing Officers (MACUHO) Student Staff Conference held Oct. 22 at Pennsylvania State University. Seven student staff members gave presentations on various topics in residential life, including technology, effective leadership skills and music education. This program gives students a chance to highlight their own skills and learn new ways of working with group dynamics on the floor, building community and appreciating diversity, Michele Kane, assistant director of residence life, said. Kane attended the conference with Goga Copic, a public administration graduate student and hall director for Dickinson E and F, Kelly Ann Law, a senior music education major and hall director for Dickinson E and F; Miguel Berg, a junior mechanical engineer and resident assistant for Dickinson D; Christopher Holdridge, a senior English major and resident assistant for Dickinson A; Kara Hess, a sophomore political science major and resident assistant for Dickinson B; Julia Tulloch, also a sophomore political science major and resident assistant for Dickinson D; and Eric Busillo, a senior mechanical engineering major and resident assistant for Dickinson B. It is important for students to develop professionally, Kane said. This conference gave them an opportunity to present their work and advance their own careers within the student affairs field. David Butler, former director of student housing at UD, was the first recipient of the David Butler Distinguished Service Award in 1988, which is given each year to recognize significant contributions to MACUHO over a period of years. The MACUHO Student Staff conference is held every year and is open to student staff members of an accredited association that owns and operates residence halls in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. MACUHO seeks to serve its members through opportunities for professional development and education, networking and access to research and current trend information within the residential life community.
