Lindsey Shover is top senior female athlete
11:33 a.m., May 18, 2006--Lindsey Shover, a standout goalkeeper who starred both on the soccer playing field and in the classroom, has been named the University of Delaware's top senior female athlete for 2005-06. Shover was honored during the annual women's intercollegiate athletics banquet held Wednesday night at Clayton Hall. Shover, who also was named the UD Alumni Association most valuable player for the Fightin' Blue Hens, is the first women's soccer player to be named the top senior athlete. The award is determined by a vote of the head coaches of the 12 women's varsity sports. A native of Lancaster, Pa., Shover was a two-time captain and four-year starter who helped lead UD to a combined record of 38-26-8 and three trips to the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament. In 2005 she helped the Hens post a record 10-5-4, earn a regional top 10 ranking, and advance to the CAA semifinals for the first time in school history. She set the UD record for career save percentage (.841), ranks No. 2 all-time in minutes played (4,828), saves (244) and goals against average (0.86), and ranks No. 3 in shutouts (20). An honor student as a health and physical education major, Shover was named to the CAA Academic Honor Roll three times and was a nominee for the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America team. In addition to Shover, the following scholar-athletes were honored as the outstanding performers on their teams, as voted by team members. Basketball: Junior guard Tyresa Smith, a health and physical education major, was selected as the UD Alumni Association most valuable player. She is a three-year standout for the Hens, and has helped lead the team to a three-year record of 56-24, the 2005 CAA regular season title and berths in the Women's National Invitation Tournament in 2005 and 2006. She earned first team All-CAA honors in 2005-06, when she was named the top defensive player in the conference. Cross country: Senior Allison Behrle was named the UD Alumni Association most valuable competitor. A four-year letter winner, Behrle served as team tri-captain in 2005 and led the squad to a fourth place finish at the CAA championships. She is an honor student as a nutrition and dietetics major, and is a CoSIDA Academic All-America nominee. Also, Behrle was presented the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Medal of Merit as the UD senior female scholar-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average, at 3.937. Field hockey: Senior Carly Campana, a two-year starter and co-captain in 2005, was named the UD Alumni Association most valuable player. She started all 19 games last season, had one assists, and helped lead a defense that allowed just 2.12 goals per game. She was selected as an alternate to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association North-South Senior All-Star Game. She is a human services, education and public policy major. Indoor track and field: Junior weight thrower Rachel Young was named the UD Alumni Association most valuable competitor. A three-year letter winner, Young was the team's top weight thrower, winning the shot put title at the Jack Pyrah Invitational, Princeton Invitational, and New York University Fasttrack Invitational. The environmental science major is a CoSIDA Academic All-America nominee. Outdoor track and field: Sophomore sprinter Paula Green was the recipient of the UD Alumni Association most valuable competitor award. The first-year letter winner won four meet sprint titles during the spring and finished 10th in the 200-meter dash at the CAA championships. She was a member of the 4x100-meter relay team that finished third in the CAA meet and the 4x400-meter relay team that finished fifth. Also, she ran on the 4x200-meter relay team that set a UD record of 1:40.99 at the Penn Relays. Lacrosse: Senior attack Megan Hager was selected the UD Alumni Association most valuable player. A four-year letter winner, Hager earned second team All-Colonial Athletic Association honors in 2006 as she finished second on the team with 38 points on 26 goals and 12 assists. An honor student as a sport management major, she played in 60 games during the course of her UD career, scoring 52 goals and collecting 32 assists. Also, senior midfielder Diana Hall was presented the Dr. Janice Jordan Award by UD Student Services for Athletes. The award honors a scholar-athlete who has made outstanding progress academically. Hall, a team co-captain in 2006, is an honor student as an exercise physiology major with a minor in coaching science and strength and conditioning. Rowing: Senior Lane Kohl was honored as the UD Alumni Association most valuable competitor. A three-year letter winner, she was a mainstay of the varsity eights boat this season in 2006 and helped lead the team to its fourth CAA championship in the last five seasons. She is an honor student as an exercise science major, is a two-time member of the College Rowing Coaches Association National Scholar-Athlete Team, and is a CoSIDA Academic All-America nominee. Soccer: In addition to the awards presented Shover, senior defender Jennifer Krepps was the winner of the UD Student Services for Athletes Outstanding Contributor Award. The four-year letter winner is a biology education major and in 2005 earned CoSIDA District 2 All-Academic first team honors for the second straight year. Softball: Sophomore second baseman Allison Borchers, an exercise physiology major, was selected the UD Alumni Association most valuable player after a record-setting season in which she helped lead the Hens to a record of 33-24 and a berth in the CAA championship tournament. Borchers earned first team All-CAA honors after hitting .382 and established UD records for hits in a season (73), runs scored in a season (36), games played in a season (57), walks in a game (4), total bases in a season (105) and longest hitting streak (15). She ranks among the national leaders in triples. Swimming and diving: Freshman Sarah Begley was named the UD Alumni Association most valuable competitor after a stellar season in which she helped lead the Hens to fifth place at the CAA championships. Begley was among the team's top freestyle sprinters and at the CAA championships she finish placed second in the 400 medley relay, third in the 100 butterfly and eighth in both the 400 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay events. Her times in the 50 freestyle (24.43), 100 freestyle (52.86) and 100 butterfly (56.98) all rank in the top three all-time at UD. Tennis: Sophomore Susan Pollack, a marketing major, was recognized as the UD Alumni Association most valuable player for the second straight season. Playing at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, Pollack earned first team All-CAA honors in doubles as she teamed with freshman Amanda Campbell to post a record of 22-6, setting a school record for doubles wins in a season. She also earned second team All-CAA singles honors after posting a team-best record of 17-7. Volleyball: Junior libero Heather Ranck was selected the UD Alumni Association most valuable player. A three-year letter winner, Ranck enjoyed an outstanding season, leading the team with 39 services aces and ranking 30th in NCAA Division I with 614 digs (5.25 per game), the fifth highest single season total in UD history. She played in all 31 matches and tied for the team lead with 117 games played. She is an honor student as a sociology major. |
