UD menŐs lacrosse will face Towson Wednesday

1:35 p.m., May 1, 2006--The University of Delaware men's lacrosse team has earned a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament and will play at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 3, at Towson University.

The Fightin' Blue Hens enter the tournament as the third seed and will take on Towson, the second seed, at Johnny Unitas Stadium. The winner will advance to the championship game Saturday and will face the winner of the other semifinal between fourth seed Villanova University and top seed Hofstra University. The CAA champion earns an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. During the regular season, UD fell 11-7 to Towson.

UD gained the third seed after a 19-3 conference victory over Robert Morris College on Saturday night at Rullo Stadium, where the Hens were unbeaten in eight games this season. UD finished the regular season 11-4 overall and 3-3 in the CAA.

Against Robert Morris, UD attack Cam Howard, the CAA co-player of the week, scored three goals and had two assists. Dan Hechtkopf had a goal and four assists, and midfielder Alex Smith won 20 of 21 faceoffs. Jordan Hall and Kyle Rotelli each had two goals and one assist, and Dan Deckelbaum and Joe Gargiulo each had two goals.

Also scoring for the Hens were Vincent Giordano, Beau Davis, Marty Kupprion, Sean Calabrese, Bob Meunier, Matt Messina and Jarryd Knouse. Goalkeepers Tommy Scherr and Warren Mayberry combined for nine saves.

The victory marked the 250th career triumph for UD Head Coach Bob Shillinglaw, who became just the fourth active NCAA Division I men's coach to reach the milestone. The two-time national coach of the year is 250-225 in his 31st season overall, including a mark of 226-208 in 28 seasons at UD.
