Fan Zhang wins Skinner chemistry award

Skinner Award winner Fan Zhang (center) is congratulated by his adviser, Joseph Fox (left), assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry, and by Robert H. Grubbs, 2005 winner of the Nobel Prize in chemistry.

4:12 p.m., May 24, 2006--Fan Zhang, a graduate student from Sunnyvale, Calif., received UD's Glenn S. Skinner Memorial Award and $2,500 on May 12 at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry annual Richard F. Heck Lecture.

The annual award honors the late Dr. Skinner, who was an active member of the department faculty for 30 years. It is awarded for distinction in scholarship, research, teaching and service. Zhang's research adviser is Joseph Fox, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemisty.

Robert H. Grubbs, 2005 winner of the Nobel Prize in chemistry, delivered the 2006 Richard F. Heck Lecture on the process for which Grubbs won the Nobel Prize, “Metathesis Catalyst for the Synthesis of Large and Small Molecules.” The lecture series, which recognizes visionary leadership in organometallic chemistry, was created in 2004 in honor of Richard F. Heck, Professor Emeritus.
