UNCW baseball team tops UD in CAA series

Todd Davison had five hits in a victory over UNC Wilmington.

11:09 a.m., May 8, 2006--The host University of North Carolina Wilmington took two of three games from the University of Delaware in a Colonial Athletic Association weekend series. UNC Wilmington won 4-3 in 11 innings on Friday and 9-5 on Sunday, with the Fightin' Blue Hens winning 13-9 on Saturday.

UD, which is 27-19 overall and 11-13 in the CAA, has six conference games remaining and is still in contention for the sixth and final tournament berth. The Hens will play a nonconference game at Temple University at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 9, and then will host Georgia State University in a CAA weekend series with games at 3 p.m., Friday, May 12, and at 1 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, May 13-14, at Bob Hannah Stadium.

In Friday's loss, center fielder Brandon Menchaca had three hits, including a home run, to lead the Hens. Dan Richardson, Alex Buchholz and Bryan Hagerich had two hits each. Billy Harris, who came on in relief of starter Chad Kerfoot, took the loss.

On Saturday, the Hens fell behind early but bounced back with seven runs in the fifth inning and three in the ninth. Todd Davison had five hits, including a home run, and four runs batted in. Hagerich had four hits, including two home runs, and scored four runs. Bill Merkler and Ryan Engelhardt also hit home runs. Starting pitcher Matt Heppner got the win.

Merkler hit a home run on Sunday and Buchholz had a pair of hits, including a double. Starting pitcher Todd Ozog took the loss.
