New site offers links to alcohol laws and more

4:35 p.m., May 4, 2006--How many UD students know that if you're under 21 and just walk into a liquor store, you can be fined up to $1,000 and spend from 30-60 days in jail?

Did you know that if you're riding in your car or walking down a Newark street with an open bottle of beer or any alcoholic beverage you can be fined $50 to $1,000?

For students who are new to UD and Newark, or for those who don't know the laws surrounding the use of alcohol and rules of conduct on and around campus, UD's Alcohol Policy and Education Council (APEC) has created an alcohol resource web page at [www.udel.edu/alcohol] that has links to information on alcohol use policies on campus, in Newark, across Delaware and nationwide.

Tracy Downs, program director for the Center for Counseling and Student Development and chairperson of APEC, said the idea for the web site came from APEC's policy subgroup. “The purpose of the web site is to provide one location where students, staff and community members can access information about alcohol policies and resources at UD, locally and nationally,” she said.

The online guide has links to the rules and regulations surrounding alcohol use in the UD code of conduct, athletics policy manual, residence hall regulations, the student judicial system and student organizations.

There's also a list of a plenty of nonalcohol-related student activities and how to have a safe and responsible party if alcohol is served. For those who overindulge, the site links to places to get help, such as the Delaware Designated Drivers web site.
