Tyresa Smith selected CAA's top defender

Tyresa Smith is the CAA Defensive Player of the Year
9:53 a.m., March 8, 2006--University of Delaware junior guard Tyresa Smith was named the Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year during the conference women's basketball awards banquet held Tuesday night in advance of the championship tournament. Smith also was named first team All-CAA

Also honored was UD point guard Alena Koshansky, who was named to the CAA All-Academic Team. Koshansky, an Academic All-America candidate, is a sport management major who averages 8.4 points and 4.4 assists per game, while ranking third in the nation with a 2.68 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Smith, Koshansky and the 21-6 Hens will begin CAA tournament play at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, March 9, when they will face the winner of the opening round game between the University of North Carolina Wilmington and Northeastern University.

Smith was joined on the first team by CAA Player of the Year Kyra Kaylor of the College of William & Mary, Tamera Young and Meredith Alexis of James Madison University and Vanessa Gidden of Hofstra University. Kaylor led the league in both scoring and rebounding.

Smith ranks 17th in the nation with an average of 3.0 steals per game and is fifth in the CAA in scoring with an average of 15.5 points per game. She leads the CAA in steals with 80 and ranks 13th in rebounding, with 6.3 per contest. Smith is third in UD history with 256 career steals and is closing in on 1,000 career points, with 963 entering the CAA tournament.
