Hen track, field teams compete in Carolina, N.J.

10:22 a.m., March 27, 2006--Competitors from the University of Delaware competed in weekend track and field meets in North Carolina and New Jersey, with Fightin' Blue Hens earning 20 top-10 finishes on Saturday afternoon at Monmouth University.

The UD men's team had 11 top-10 finishes, led by Matt O'Brian, who took third place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:09.18. The women's team had nine top-10 finishes, led by Annie Kowtuniak, who finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:19.79) with the third best time in UD history.

Also for the UD men, Kyle Casella finished fourth in the hammer (161-10) and 15th in the shot put (42-8), Alex Gambogi fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:10.54), Kevin Kemmerle fifth in the 10,000 meters (33:08.93), Matt Arbaugh and Chris Martens tied for seventh in the pole vault (12-6), Craig Sabatini eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:36.26), Adam Cianfichi ninth in the javelin (157-4), Dave DiVirgilio ninth in the pole vault (12-6), Mike Hazeltine ninth in the 10,000 meters (33:37.52), and Doug Alpers 10th in the discus (132-0) and 18th in the shot put (41-11 1/4).

Also for the UD women, Colleen Reid was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:36.64), Julianne Twomey fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (13:18.52), Leslie Lynch sixth in the discus (117-3), Nicole Ambrosino eighth in the discus (111 6), Annie Fulton ninth in the triple jump (32-10 1/2) and 22nd in the triple jump (14-5), Angela Pollino ninth in the hammer (105-7) and 11th in the shot put (33-6), Laura Milazzo 10th in the hammer (103-9), and Kaitlyn McGowan 10th in the pole vault (9-0).

At the Raleigh Relays held Friday and Saturday at Paul Derr Stadium on the campus of North Carolina State University, UD senior Sam MacKenzie led all Hen competitors by finishing third in the 1,500 meters in a time of 3:50.77, the second best in UD history. Senior Casey Bennett paced the UD women with a fifth-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet, 3-3/4 inches.

Also for the UD men, Brad Dodson finished sixth in the 1,500 meters (3:52.72), Will Jurkowski sixth in the 800 meters (1:53.73), Kyle Schmid sixth in the 5,000 meters (15:05.52) and Jared Wasser 14th in the shot put (47-9 3/4) and 25th in the hammer throw (133-8).

Also for the UD women, Rachel Young finished 13th in the shot put (42-8) and 30th in the hammer (128-7) and Alexi Capsouras 14th in the 400-meter hurdles (1:04.62) and 36th in the 110-meter hurdles.
