Meissner competes in World Championships 9:13 a.m., March 23, 2006--Kimmie Meissner of the University of Delaware Figure Skating Club will take to the ice for her short program on Friday, March 24, in the 2006 International Skating Union World Championships being held in Calgary. The ladies free skate, or long program, will be held Saturday, March 25. Meissner skated well in her qualifying group on Wednesday, finishing just behind the group leader, Japan's Fumie Suguri. She has struggled with her spins because she is recovering from a ruptured eardrum. Meissner is one of three American ladies competing in the World championships, joining Turin Winter Olympics teammates Sasha Cohen, who won the silver medal, and Emily Hughes. Cohen finished behind Suguri and Meissner in qualifying. Hughes was third in the other qualifying group, trailing Joannie Rochette of Canada and Yukari Nakano of Japan. The 16-year-old Meissner trains at UD's Ice Skating Science Development Center, where she is coached by Pam Gregory. She won the silver medal in the U.S. national championships to earn a place on the Olympic and World teams. |
