Lindsay Jones throws no-hitter to lift Hens

Lindsay Jones
9:09 a.m., March 23, 2006--Senior pitcher Lindsay Jones threw a no-hitter to lift the host University of Delaware softball team to a 1-0 victory over Lehigh University in the second game of a doubleheader played Wednesday afternoon. The Fightin' Blue Hens lost the opener 4-2.

The no-hitter was the 14th in UD history and the first since Jones teamed with Jenn Joseph on a five-inning no-hitter of Rutgers University on April 26, 2005. The last no-hitter by a single pitcher was on May 12, 2000, when Kristi O'Connell no-hit Boston University in the America East Conference championship tournament.

Jones is just the third pitcher in UD history to have been involved in more than one no-hitter in her career. O'Connell was involved in six no-hitters and Patty Freeman in three.

Jones walked the first batter she faced but got the next to line into a double play. She then retired the next 19 batters, four by strikeouts. UD scored its lone run in the first inning, when second baseman Allison Borchers scored on a double by shortstop Kim Ovittore.

In the first game, the Hens broke on top 2-0 but Lehigh battled back and won with a two-run seventh inning. Borchers had a pair of hits and drove in both UD runs with a triple in the second inning. Pitcher Carolynn Sloat, the Colonial Athletic Association pitcher of the week for her stellar work on the mound in five games last week, took the loss.

The Hens are now 16-7 on the season. They will return to action this weekend with a CAA series at George Mason University. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 25, and a single game at 1 p.m., Sunday, March 26.
