UD's Kimmie Meissner wins world championship

Kimmie Meissner
9:34 p.m., March 25, 2006--Sixteen-year-old Kimmie Meissner of the University of Delaware Figure Skating Club is the new world champion.

Meissner skated a flawless long program on Saturday, March 25, in Calgary to capture the International Skating Union's World Figure Skating Championship.

It was an outstanding competition for UD-based skaters, with the Bulgarians Albena Denkova and Maxim Staviski also winning gold in ice dancing. The pair moved to the United States to train at UD with Natalia Linitchuk.

After her performance, Meissner celebrated with her coach, Pam Gregory, as the scores were announced. She was holding several stuffed animals presented to her by fans, and Gregory held her blue and gold skate guards.

Fumie Suguri of Japan finished second, and American Sasha Cohen finished third.

Meissner landed seven triple jumps, including two triple-triple combinations, and said after the event that she felt “awesome.”

A student at Fallston High School in nearby Maryland, Meissner has been making the commute to the UD Ice Skating Science Development Center since she was 8 years old to train with Gregory.

She won the silver medal in the 2006 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships in St. Louis, and finished in sixth place at the Winter Olympic Games in Turin, Italy, last month.

The world championship makes her the early favorite for the 2010 Winter Olympics to be held in Vancouver.
