UD Outdoor Pool memberships sold out

1:33 p.m., June 16, 2006--Memberships in the University of Delaware's Outdoor Pool for the 2006 summer season have been sold out, and the waiting list for memberships also has been filled.

In past years, UD Outdoor Pool memberships were available through late June or early July, but the low cost of memberships, recent renovations and a dynamic marketing campaign have made season passes to the pool a hot ticket item, Jim Kaden, manager of the pool and ice arenas, said.

“We have been able to upgrade the pool each year. We now have over 300 lounge chairs, new pool slides for the kids, an updated snack bar menu, an eating area on the pool deck, funbrellas for shade and repainted locker rooms,” Kaden said. “It's been a total team effort, from Facilities custodians, pool staff and lifeguards, everyone has worked hard to make the pool a fun family place.”

For the 2006 summer season, the UD Outdoor Pool sold 1,090 memberships, representing about 3,500 persons, Kaden said.

“We average from around 700 to 1,000 persons using the pool on a daily basis when the weather is hot,” Kaden said.

Kaden also said that online registration, which accounted for 250 memberships, comparatively low pool prices and meeting members' expectations also are responsible for the continuing popularity of memberships in UD's Outdoor Pool.

“We held a focus group this winter with Matt Robinson [associate professor of health and exercise sciences], where we asked our members what they wanted out of their pool experience,” Kaden said. “By listening to our members, we added special events, like late-night swims, July 4th parties and extended pool hours at the end of the pool season in August and September.”

While the pool does not sell nonmember tickets on a daily basis, such tickets are available for UD students at $3 and faculty and staff at $5 per day.
