UD star Tiara Malcom joins basketball staff

Former UD star Tiara Malcom has joined the women’s basketball coaching staff.

9:16 a.m., June 14, 2006--Tiara Malcom, one of the top players in University of Delaware women's basketball history, is returning to her alma mater as a member of Head Coach Tina Martin's staff.

Malcom will replace assistant coach Diana Spencer, who resigned after two seasons on the Fightin' Blue Hens staff to pursue a master's degree at Syracuse University.

Malcom graduated from UD in 2005 and played professionally last season in Barreiro, Portugal, with the GD ESSA Basketball Club.

“We are excited to have Tiara back with our program,” Martin said. “She is one of the finest players I've ever coached, and her work ethic and knowledge of the game are outstanding. We are confident that those strong characteristics she had as a player will be valuable as she joins the coaching ranks.”

Malcom was a standout at UD for four seasons, during which the Hens went 89-32, won Colonial Athletic Association regular season titles in 2003 and 2005, and were selected to participate in the Women's National Invitation Tournament three times. The Hens also reached the CAA tournament championship games in both 2003 and 2005.

Malcom served as captain of the 2004-05 team, was a three-time All-CAA selection and was the CAA Player of the Year as a senior, becoming just the third player in UD history to be named a conference player of the year. Also, she was named the University's outstanding senior female athlete for the 2004-05 season.

Malcom worked at the UD Women's Basketball Camp, the UD Men's Basketball Camp, the Future Stars Basketball Camp and the Final Exam Basketball Camp. She also was active as a student intern with New Castle County Head Start and as a camp counselor at the Clarence Fraim Boys and Girls Club in Wilmington.

Malcom joins a UD staff that includes 11th-year associate head coach Jeanine Radice and third year assistant Melissa Dymek.
