Internet2 Math & Science Virtual Forum July 6

3:46 p.m., June 30, 2006--A videoconference of Internet2 Math & Science Virtual Forum, an educational event showcasing astronomical, physical and computer science applications using Internet2's high-performance network, is set for 9:30-11:30 a.m., Thursday, July 6, in Studio A (on the third floor) of Pearson Hall.

Intended for math and science educators, students and scholars, the teleconference event will feature three presentations, including one by Martin Swany, UD assistant professor of computer and information sciences.

Swany, who is the first Internet2 Fellow, will discuss his computer science research and most recent project, a high-performance data-transfer system for Internet2's Hybrid Packet/Optical Infrastructure.

The two other presentations are by Andrew Post-Zwicker, a plasma physicist and educator at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory in Princeton, N.J.; and Peter Michaud, a public information officer for the Gemini Observatory in Hilo, Hawaii.

Post-Zwicker will talk about the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab, its research and its use of telecommunications to connect remotely located students to state-of the-art science education resources. Michaud will discuss the twin 8-meter telescopes operated by the Gemini Observatory and will talk about the observatory's partnership with astronomers from around the world.

The free forum is open to the public and no reservations are required. For a detailed schedule of the forum, visit [www.magpi.net/mathandscience.html]. For more information, call (302) 831-1466.
