2 Delaware ballplayers selected in MLB draft

Todd Davison

9:36 a.m., June 8, 2006--Two University of Delaware baseball players have been selected in the 2006 Major League Baseball first-year player draft held June 6-7 in New York. Senior shortstop Todd Davison was chosen by the Baltimore Orioles in the 19th round of the draft as the 565th overall pick and senior left-handed pitcher Brent Gaphardt was chosen by the Seattle Mariners in the 21st round as the 621st overall pick.

Davison hit .357 while starting all 54 games for the Fightin' Blue Hens in 2006. He scored a team-leading 66 runs, and had 25 doubles, 11 home runs and 42 runs batted in. A team co-captain, he was named second-team All-Colonial Athletic Association.

Brent Gaphardt
Davison is UD's all-time leader in games played (222), at-bats (918) and assists (646). He is second all-time with 66 doubles and third all-time with 279 hits.

Gaphardt was injured for much of the 2006 season, appearing in just two games before undergoing surgery to repair ligament damage in his left elbow. In 2005, he appeared in 13 games with a record of 5-5 and an earned run average of 5.04. That season he threw a no-hitter at Hofstra University and subsequently was named the national pitcher of the week by the National Baseball Writers Association.

The selections of Davison and Gaphardt marked the sixth consecutive season the Hens have had at least one player selected in the Major League Baseball draft, and the first time they have had multiple players drafted since Kris Dufner and Mark Michael in 2003. The Texas Rangers chose catcher Brian Valichka in the 19th round in 2005.

Northeastern University pitcher Adam Ottavino was the first player from the CAA selected, going to the St. Louis Cardinals with the last pick in the first round. A record 24 CAA players had been selected through the draft's first 41 rounds.
