DelaWorld welcomes new UD students

3:52 p.m., June 21, 2006--DelaWorld 101 is the first important “course” for admitted freshmen and transfer students as they begin their college careers at UD. Scheduled weekdays this summer from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., June 20-July 19 (except on July 3, 4 and 14), DelaWorld officially welcomes new students to UD and provides a one-day orientation for them and their parents. (Click on “The Faces of DelaWorld 2006” graphic at the top of this page and on other UDaily article pages to see photos of some of the participants.)

Besides giving new students a preview of their lives in the fall, DelaWorld allows them to register for classes, meet with an academic adviser, obtain their UD identification card, sign up for online bill payment and become familiar with student organizations, housing, campus life, technology and activities.

There's an information fair with free ice cream where representatives from athletics, music, religious organizations, student media and others can answer questions about programs and opportunities available.

Students also can sit in on special information sessions about campus diversity and services for students with disabilities.

For parents, there are sessions on academic and student life, get-togethers with the parents of other new and current students and information about financial aid, billing, housing, student health, computing, banking and meal plans.

The UD admissions office is expecting 3,600 students and 8,000 parents and family members this year. “On a given day, we can have 200-240 students plus their parents and guests,” Michael McCloskey, assistant director of admissions, said.

McCloskey said DelaWorld is introducing several new things this year.

“Families will all receive a DelaWorld ID card that they can use for parking, lunch and ice cream during the DelaWorld Fair. A new video has been added to the Student Life 101 session and there's a new program called 'Break Out of Your Shell at UDel' focusing on technology and diversity. New items in the packets include information on train safety, alcohol education and the alcohol awareness campaign initiated last spring. There's information on legal Internet downloads, as well as information from the UD Bookstore, plus much, much more,” McCloskey said.
