Three Hens selected Arthur Ashe Scholars

Kaili Kao

10:57 a.m., June 13, 2006--Three University of Delaware scholar-athletes--Kaili Kao, Chris Dixon and Jason Hanschmann--have been honored as Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars as selected by Diverse Issues in Higher Education magazine.

The three were among 368 scholar-athletes from all three NCAA divisions honored. The Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars program recognizes undergraduate students of color who have achieved excellence in academics and athletics, with the awards inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.'s commitment to education and athletics.

Jason Hanschmann
Kao, a junior defender on the Fightin' Blue Hens field hockey team, was selected for the second straight year. A three-year letter winner, she started nine games and scored three goals in 2005. The previous season, she played an important role in helping lead UD to the Colonial Athletic Association championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament.

Kao, who is enrolled in the UD Honors Program, has a 3.81 grade point average as an international relations major with minors in French, business and religious studies. She is a dean's list student, a three-time member of the CAA Academic Honor Roll, a College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America nominee, and a two-time member of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association national academic squad. She is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society.

Hanschmann, a sophomore tennis player, is a two-year letter winner who went 7-7 in singles and 12-8 in doubles in 2005-06. As a freshman, he won 18 singles matches to establish a new UD freshman record.

Hanschmann is a philosophy major with a 3.35 grade point average. He is a dean's list student, a CoSIDA Academic All-America nominee, and a member of the CAA Academic Honor Roll. He serves as a youth tennis instructor during the summer.

Chris Dixon
Dixon, a junior who competes for the UD track and field team, was named to the team for the second straight year. A standout hurdler, Dixon captured the CAA outdoor 400-meter hurdles title in April and competed at the NCAA Regionals in May. He ranks No. 3 all-time at UD in both the indoor 60-meter hurdles (8.72) and the outdoor 400-meter hurdles (52.73).

Dixon, who has a 3.27 grade point average as a computer engineering major, is a dean's list student, a CoSIDA Academic All-America candidate and a four-time member of the CAA Academic Honor Roll. He is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and has volunteered in his community with the Landisville (Pa.) Church of God, Landisville Elementary School, and the Crispus Attucks Homeless Shelter.
